Laine got out of bed and read silently to herself in her room for 30 minutes or so. This is typical. I can hear her dropping books on the floor from our bedroom. At 7:45, she was ready to come out. I woke up Al and we went upstairs together, only to find that we couldn't open the door. Laine had locked it from the inside. *Sigh*
So... Al went and got a paperclip to unlock it. As he began to pick the lock, I turned on the hallway light so that he could see better. POP! The light bulb blew. *Double sigh*
Al got the door unlocked and we changed her for the day then brought her downstairs:
(insert video here)- we'll get it uploaded... eventually

Smiling Newborn & Floor Child
Trent has been smiling back for awhile now. And Daddy discovered if you lightly press in his dimples with your thumb and index finger (just like you are pinching his face), he will give a huge smile and laugh.
Laine apparently is too confined in her bed and would rather sleep on the floor. Here is how I found her an hour after I tucked her into bed for the night:

So what you are saying is that she intentionally put herself in this position? (Head tilt.) Huh, interesting.

One Month Old
Today Trent turned one month old. What has been accomplished in the past month, you ask?
We have managed to keep him healthy and alive.
Okay, maybe this isn't the best picture to demonstrate the living part.

Mommy can fit into her jeans again... with a muffin top. (I refuse to post a picture.)
Trent went to the spa. Alright, that was in the hospital and that is a Bili-bed to assist with Trent's bilirubin count. (They wouldn't let us discharge until his levels got into normal levels.)

Asuka has had to readjust to not being the center of attention... again.

Laundry. Lots of laundry. Oh, hello Asuka!

Mommy has over ten gallons of frozen breast milk in reserve. (4 weeks, 10 gallons... just think about it)

Laine has bonded with her brother. When I go to pick her up at daycare, she will backhand any other toddler that gets too close to Trent.

Laine is reliving her childhood. "Wee!"

Laine is now helping out with household chores, like washing the dishes.

Sleep is still hard to come by. But in five months, I think that may change.

Potty, Cold, "Oh no!"
Laine did the oddest thing yesterday. She asked to use the potty FOUR TIMES! Each time she went pee in her potty. Why am I so surprised? She isn't even 18 months old yet people! This is young, even if it is a temporary thing. She even knows how to use toilet paper... kinda.
Trent's cold is waking him up at night. His nose gets clogged and he wakes up. Poor thing. Oh wait, I mean poor parents! He has had this cold for most of his out-of-womb life.
While my children look more like me than Al, I have discovered some traits that Trent has not gotten from me. Snoring and farting. Both typically done while asleep. Yup, not my genetics at all. I am not saying who he has gotten these from, I am just simply stating that it is not from me.
A cute thing- When Laine hears Trent cry, she puts her finger to her mouth and says, "Shh!"
Another cute thing- Laine has done an excellent job adjusting to Trent's presence in the house. She likes to gently rest her head on Trent and smile.
A funny- Al was in the kitchen and I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth. I heard Laine laugh, so I went into the living room to see why she was laughing. I found her kneeling over Trent, who was in the swing, and Laine was wiping Trent's face with a baby wipe. Trent had his hands up in the air and was shaking his head back and forth. He had a "what in the world is going on" look on his face. Laine enjoys carrying a baby wipe around. She uses them to wipe up her snotty nose, wipe down flat surfaces, and wipe the floor. Apparently she thought that Trent's face was in need of a wipe down too.
Another funny- Laine's newest most-frequently-used-phrase is "Oh no!" She uses it when she sees a mess. (Another trait that does not come from mommy.) When she says it, she puts her arms out to her sides with her palms face up. When she gets down from her highchair and sees the food she dumped? "Oh no!" When she dumps her toys on the floor? "Oh no!" When she sees a dust bunny on the floor? "Oh no!" It really is quite hilarious.

Cord
Most of Trent's umbilical cord fell off today. Not sure why I am telling all of you, but it is something that I want to remember a year or two down the road.
Also, I have been peed on several times today. Not because I have had ill-timed diaper changes, but because it has been leaking through Trent's newborn diapers. I have had to change both of our outfits several times. Looks like he needs to be put in size 1 already. I am sure I will be able to find a happy home to the rest of the newborn size diapers.

Feet!
Trent can now bare to have his feet uncovered. From birth, if his feet were uncovered he would cry. Touch his feet? Oh, watch out! Now he can have them uncovered and he won't cry. But he is still very ticklish. Let's not tickle him while he sleeps though, please? A cranky baby is not fun.

Overdue Entry
Trent had his first doc appointment today. He is a little guy, but he is doing very well.
Weight: 7 lbs 15 oz.
Height: 20 1/2 "
Head Circum: 14"
Trent has been a very easy baby thus far. He only cries when he wants something. We have had an easy time determining what that something is. He does not like his feet exposed and really loves being swaddled. He also laughs in his sleep.
Yesterday and today we have noticed that he is able to track voices. The doctor today said hello to him and he turned his head to her. "Oh, wow," she said with her eyebrows raised. "Yeah, I know," I responded, "we just noticed that he was tracking yesterday."
Laine is living up to her big sister name. She gets very concerned when Trent cries and comes running to his side. She also brings him gifts, like blankets and toys and puts them on his lap. She learned how to give "nice pets" to the kitties and has applied those same skills to touching Trent. Trent has received many head rubs.
The Milk Factory is up and running. I am up to 50-60 ounces a day. Of that, Trent is taking in about 25 ounces. Therefore the stock-pile in the freezer is slowly growing. Trent's latch was great, however, once my milk came in nursing became too painful to handle. I think my milk ducts go lower than they should and that the tips of several ducts end up in Trent's mouth when he latches correctly. Note- OUCH! The hard ducts caused his latch to slip which resulted in even more pain and made me bleed. So, that is why I have moved to pumping again. It is great that I don't have to be accessible to him 24/7 for his every hunger need. The flip side is that pumping 4-6 times a day takes a lot of time out of my schedule. Not just the time of actual pumping but the washing of the equipment, preparing bottles, washing bottles, freezing milk, etc. I think it comes to 6 hours a day over the course of a 24 hour period. But breast milk is best for Trent and the time it takes to get it to him is worth it.

Induction- GO!
I just had the pleasure of putting a tiny little chalky pill under my tongue at 11 AM. So far it seems to be bringing on the contractions more and harder. Damn, my tail bone hurts.
Any who, I am 3.5 cm and people here don't seem to think that things will take long. I seriously hope they are right!

Doc Appt and Subsequent Hospital Visit
I have been awake for the past couple of hours, so I figured it’d be a good time to update this.
I had my last doc appointment yesterday. Afterwards we were sent to the hospital for a non-stress test and an ultrasound to determine if Trent was having any signs of distress. If anything did not come out perfect, we were going to be induced right then and there. His heart was monitored for about an hour and a half to two hours (non-stress test). The amount of amniotic fluid was measured. His muscle tone was examined. His breathing was recorded. Etc. He passed the non-stress test with flying colors and he got an 8 out of 8 on the other test that was done with the ultrasound. All this means that we can go a couple more days before having to induce. *phew* Although I was again offered induction out of convenience, which I turned down.
The plan from here is to call my doc office tomorrow so that they can schedule induction with the hospital. It will either be Thursday or Friday. I am leaning towards Friday and I think my doc is leaning towards Thursday. It is very odd. We are planning our son’s birthday. It seems… weird. Any who, MY plan is for him to come as late as possible since he is doing just fine inside me and there is no reason to panic. However, there is a window of time on Fridays where cord blood cannot be donated since it has to be shipped to CA. Having Trent’s cord blood thrown away when it could be used to save someone’s life is just not an option. So maybe induction on Thursday evening would be best. We will see. Al has to look at his work calendar and wants to schedule it around a meeting and some work. I also have some reports that I want to get done at work that can only be done after Wednesday. I would say sorry to Trent, but he also wants to put it off too.
Stats from Doc Appt-
Dialated: 3 cm
Effacement: “Very very thin”
Engagement: -1
Heart rate: 120s
While laying down at the hospital being hooked up to the fetal heart monitor and contraction-thingy, it reminded me of how Laine hated being hooked up to them. She fought and kicked at them. Trent? Yup, not a care in the world. The ultra sound tech was trying to get him to move for the muscle tone test. He did not care at all that she was poking him. He did wiggle around a bit during the doc appointment when my doc was checking me and she was poking his head. The ultra sound tech had to go on to other parts of the test and return to the muscle tone part when he felt like waking up.
Laine has apparently entered her twos (developmentally) already. Hissy-fits? Check. Doing things she knows she is not supposed to do (while saying, “No no no no” while doing it)? Check. All I have to say is, that’s my daughter! We just have to ensure that we provide her with clear and consistent boundaries, with clear and consistent rules. So grandparents beware, spoiling is okay but rules and boundaries must be upheld. Our daughter is too intelligent for those shenanigans.

To induce or not to induce? That is not the question
So my appointment yesterday showed that no new advancement has occurred. Shucks!
However, the ball is in my court as to when I want go to the hospital to deliver this little one. It was pretty much indicated that I can call and say, "I would like to go to the hospital now and have them induce labor," to which my doctors will respond, "Okay." Scary thought.
Since he is healthy, not showing any signs of distress, moving regularly, etc. I have no desire to go through induced labor unnecessarily. Well other than the fact that I am sick and tired of being pregnant! But that is on me, not him. I will permit nature to take its course and only permit medical science to intervene if he shows signs of distress or if I hit week 42.
Natural forms of induction though are free game! Since nature will prevent those methods from actually working if the baby and mommy are not ready, I am comfortable with using them... frequently.

Stretching Membranes. Well, that doesn't seem all that bad.
So being awake since 3:15 AM and having a plethora of energy all day apparently made my blood pressure rather high. Whoops!
Trent's heart rate: 140s
Tummy Measurement: 35 cm
Dilated: 2.5 (and can still stretch it out to 3 cm)
Effaced: 70%
To assist things along, my doctor stretched my membranes. That is a nice way of saying that she put my fingers in my cervix and stretched it out as far as it would go several times over. That's rather... uncomfortable. The hope is that it will get my body to progress the next time I am having false labor for hours on end. So far tonight I have been in quite a bit of pain. Several contractions. Some stronger than others. Not really in a pattern. None are debilitating. I can pretty much talk during them still. Therefore, I know that I need to be in a lot more pain before this comes to anything that will result in a baby.

2.3 Mile Walk & Insomnia
This past Saturday I was determined to walk this baby out of me. (Son, you were issued your 7 day Eviction Notice last Friday and you are running out of time.) So my mother and I went for a walk Saturday morning with Laine before it got too hot outside. We ended up walking 2.3 miles. It sure did have an impact. Yup, once we came back I was in desperate need of a nap. That was about the only thing that it did. My hips loosened a little more, I guess that is positive as well.
It is the wee-hours of the morning. I have insomnia and I do not feel like laying in bed and letting acid reflex attack my throat. So, I am up with the kitties. Let's see, what to up-date you on.
My body apparently loves to give me false labor pains on Monday evenings. I had a couple of hours of it again this week. An hour or two after I went to bed last night it stopped though. Sigh.
Laine now waives. She sometimes says "bye-bye." Other spoken words: milk, dog, all done, up, your welcome, no, two shoes, and then the random phrases that you wonder if you heard correctly. Such as, "I'm going out the door." I swear that is what I heard in response to asking her, "Where are you going?"
Laine is learning the words to Ba-Ba Black Sheep. She watches and listens intently. She then sings Ba Ba Ba Ba... all in tune, but she is trying to figure out how to contort her mouth to make the word "black" and "sheep."
Trent is a cuddle bug still. I have a feeling he is going to be my laid back child. He slept a lot yesterday and thus far this morning. Maybe he knows something that I don't know. A rest before the storm, perhaps? Wink wink nudge nudge.
He is in the perfect position for child birth. His back is to my right side with his legs and arms to my left. His head is in my pelvis sideways, which is just perfect perfect. We are now 3 days away from his due date. Wink wink nudge nudge.
He has been having the hiccups 2-3 times a day, the poor kid. He does not get mad at them though. As a general whole, he has not minded having someone in his space either. He minds when people play with his feet, arms, and legs. But if I rest something on him (provided that it is not hot or cold) he doesn't try to kick it off. He is aware of temperature. He can tell when someone has their hand up to my bare belly. He will kick and wiggle against the heat source. He does not seem to mind it, he just knows that it is there.
He has dropped more and he is no longer able to use my ribs as a butt scratcher. Thank god.
We have our hospital bag packed up. It is nice to know what to expect. We over packed last time with Laine's birth. I looked at a couple lists online and in my baby book. "Won't need that. Won't need that. That's packed. Won't need that" etc. Those lists make you prepare as if you are going to a back-woods hospital that doesn't have any idea what is involved in childbirth. Lucky for me, this hospital does.
Yes, I am still working. We have all the plans worked out if I go into labor there. Many people have offered to help at work. From driving me directly to my hospital, to riding with me on the train while I am in labor, I'm covered. I think I have previously mentioned that a woman on my floor used to be a Mid-Wife, who has also offered her services to me. Meanwhile, my supervisor says that she is very capable of calling 9-1-1. So, I really have all my bases covered. As long as I don't have an emergency, which would entail me going to the closest hospital to my work, I am good.
The closest hospital is very important to the city. It is one of the largest public hospitals in the country. They specialize in gun shot wounds... I mean, they have the only level 1 trauma center in the city. Seriously, if you are shot in Atlanta, Grady is the place to go! They also specialize in delivering drug-addicted babies... I mean, they have a very good Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. With all sarcasm aside, there are many non-drug addicted women in the city who choose to have their babies there. If you were delivered there, you are known as a Grady Baby and there is a sense of pride in it. Again, a very important hospital for this city, but one I'd rather not deliver at.
It is now 5:20 AM. I have been awake since 3:15. I'm going to go lay down until the alarm goes off. Ain't insomnia great?

It is not nesting...
... it is called “ensuring that there are no pine needles on the back patio.” Why is it important? I don’t know! It just had to be done! So there I was, 39 weeks and 3 days pregnant, in 90-some-odd degree weather, sweeping the back patio of all pine needles. (Patting myself on the back.)

Dear Lord- Get him out of me!
From 4 PM to 9 PM yesterday I was having rather strong false labor pains. I could walk and get them stronger, and I managed to get 3 full contractions, but nothing stuck. At 9, everything just went away.
My mom is here now awaiting the arrival and helping with Laine. It is nice to know that we will not have to call anyone to watch Laine when I go into labor.
My mom was playing with the little man last night. Rubbing his back, chasing his foot/leg, etc. Suddenly my mom said, "You are having a contraction." Of course I was. It was small but certainly present. As one would expect, my uterus had turned into a stone and my mom was unable to play her games with the little one until it went away. Well, I admit, I got up and started walking to make it get stronger. (Whistling and acting innocent.)
When I got in to work this morning, Myrtis said (in response to me coming to work and not having the baby), "I am very disappointed in you." I laughed. On my way out this afternoon, she said, "I hope not to see you tomorrow!" "That is the sweetest thing you have ever said to me," I responded.
Stats from today's doctor's appointment-
Tummy measurement: 34 cm (Smaller because he dropped a wee bit more. See next stat.)
Head engagement: -2/-3
Dilation: 2.5 cm but my doc was able to stretch it out to 3 cm with her fingers. (Note- that is not comfortable)
Effacement: 50%
Heart rate: 130s
My doc indicated that it is very likely that I will go into labor in the next week. THANK GOD! Oh, did I say that out loud? Whoops. If I do make it through the week, a new plan may be introduced.
Oh and were you aware that putting pressure on the pressure points that induce labor really work? I MAY have been rubbing those spots recently and I MAY have been able to induce a small contraction or two or three or more. (Whistling and acting innocent again.) Oh, and there is a spot on the hand as well.

Today's Stats
Tummy measurement: 35 cm
Dilation: 2 cm
Effacement: almost 50%
Head engagement: -3
Heartbeat: 130s
So, this explains why I have to pee every hour and a half or so, and the max capacity of my bladder is equivalent to one of those individual coffee creamer thingys.
Apparently two weeks ago I was-
Dilated: 1.5 cm
Effacement: 25%
Of course I wasn't told any of that two weeks ago. This is why I favor the doc I saw today and is the one who delivered Laine. She also happens to be the one on call this week. (Wink wink nudge nudge, little man.) The less favored of the two is on call next week. Of course Al and my mom are all aiming for next week. *Humph* THEY were not the ones who were woken up at 12:45 AM by a contraction, therefore, I do not believe that their votes count.

New Update
Holy crap these past several days have sucked. Thursday I was inducing uterine tightness by walking (not quite to the point of full contractions though). Friday I had it a couple of times. It has also been doing it on its own, just more so when I walk and stand.
I ended up sending out an Emergency Back-Up Plan email to friends in the area. So now I have a list of people I can call if this little guy makes an early escape. My mom arrives on the 12th.
On my appointment on Tuesday, I will have the doc check to see if I have any physical advancement in conjunction to all this pain I have been feeling. Like right this second... breathe breathe... oh this hurts... (pause from typing)... aaaand there we go. Moving on!
So I promised I would post about the baby shower that work put on for me last week. It was organized by my supervisor, Rosalyn, and the theme was Sweets & Treats. There was a spread of sweet junk food and a plethora of presents (aka- treats).
Of course, Cassandra would not let the shower go by without making me wear a foolish hat. She maintained it throughout the shower so that I would have maximum embarrassment. (Me sitting next to Linda reading an email she received. Cassandra adding accessories to the hat while I opened presents.)

There was a mishap when the red velvet cake was brought in. So it was turned into "dip." It still tasted excellent though. (Linda scooping Rosalyn's Red Velvet cake into a bowl.)

Some of us did not leave our work at our desks. (Judy and Melissa hard at work on their Blackberries.)

Lots of good presents were received. (A Linus onesie from Melissa. A handmade photo book about Laine from Christina.)

And many people came.
(L to R: Me, Raelene's back, can't remember her name, Stephanie, Valerie, Rosalyn)

(L to R: Melissa's foot, Shelia, Cassandra, Christina, Lee's legs)

(L to R: Rosalyn, Stephanie, Valerie, the back of the head of the woman's name that I can't remember, Judy, Melissa, Shelia, Cassandra, Christina, Lee's legs again)

(L to R: most of Ricki, Melissa, Linda, Dazara, Wendy, half of nameless woman. I hope I can remember her name just in case she finds this site.)

More people than that came, but I only have really bad shots of them or the back of their heads.

Donna is Amazing
Last weekend our good friend Donna came over and took maternity shots. I wanted maternity shots because, well, I hopefully will never be pregnant again. (I know that sounds horrible, BUT, I am writing this in between very strong Braxton-Hicks contractions... so... bite me. On top of that, I have horrible insomnia, my hips are physically breaking into two, I am walking like I am riding a horse, I want to throw-up, I'm 0% effaced, I am 0 cm dilated, and I have another 4 weeks of this. So if never wanting to be pregnant again makes me a horrible person... well then, hello, I am a horrible person.)
Anywho... onto the beauty of pregnancy. Since I wanted to remember my last pregnancy as a "beautiful thing," I asked Donna if we could take some pictures to remember the "joys" of pregnancy.

Okay, so I begin with a non-maternity shot. Even still, I carried her full-term, so it is somewhat related. Here is the beautiful (soon-to-be) big sister playing in her tube.

Big foot, little foot, what begins with foot? Football, Footloose, and foot fungus. (Crickets.) I take it that no one here has ever read Dr. Seuss' ABC book? *Sigh* Work with me people!

What you don't see is the 3 pillows we needed to prop me into this position.

Yes, I am wearing nothing more than a sheet. Problems with that? Well then, aren't you glad that I did not post the pictures where I was completely nude! (Sticking out my tounge.)

(See last comment above.)

See that smile? It is called ACTING! When we were doing these shots, Donna said, "Make love to the camera." To which I raised both eyebrows and gave a doe-eyed look (well, it was more like deer in headlights doe-eyed look). Of course that shot did not come out so great and is not included here. Although, I think the look made Donna laugh so hard that she nearly peed her pants.

Must... hold... baby... in.

Isn't that the most precious look you have ever seen? Laine really hammed it up for the camera!

Hide-and-go-seek is not a game I am good at right now.

See, I told you I would get a shot of Laine putting her finger in my belly button! Ta-da!

Did you know if you take the weight I have gained in this pregnancy and add Laine's current weight, it is equivalent to 50% of my pre-pregnancy body weight? Therefore, this is a picture of me working out!

See, still not even breaking a sweat. (Alright, I admit that holding Laine is extremely difficult on my body at this point.)

The ever so classic heart on tummy shot. I used a black-and-white version of this shot on my Thank You cards for my Baby Shower at work that was held on Friday. (More about that later.)

This was a last minute one. The damn' Rose of Sharon bush in our backyard would not give up these flowers. I practically mangled the branch to get them.

This is a Mommy-eye view of pregnancy. Where's my lap? (Shrug.) I haven't seen it in months.

This one is just brilliant. 100% Donna's idea.
And there you have it, evidence that I am fat. Yes, the "joys" of pregnancy masked by the physical beauty it actually contains.

Yup, Definitely Taking After Mommy's Side of the Family
Appointments are now every week. I have determined that he is following the male trend on my side of the family. In other words, he decided to have his major growth spurt at the very end of the pregnany. I managed to go from 136 to 144 pounds over the course of two weeks. I am now 7 pounds shy of my max weight with Laine’s pregnancy. My tummy measurement went up to 36 cm. He is no longer smaller than usual. Maybe it is just the way I am carrying him now.
I have not dilated at all, even though Braxton-Hicks contractions have increased. I was told that it is very normal for a second pregnancy to advance more quickly at the tail end and not take weeks and weeks.

Missing: Badge of Honor
With this pregnancy I have developed a belly button that pokes out. The right side of my belly button poked out and was visible through thin shirts. (He is always on my right side now. In the same exact position Laine was in.) I have quite enjoyed my belly button and I played with it often. It was my badge of honor.
This morning I got up and went into the closet to figure out what I was going to wear today. I went to feel my belly button and was startled. It was gone! Well... not gone, but it wasn't poking out. Noooooooo!!!!
I looked down, cocked my head, and thought, "Son, what the hell are you doing waaaaaay down there?" I went and looked at my profile in the mirror. Well well, he is starting to drop. Already. Crap. I mean... shit. No, try again. Err... yay! (Giving a smile.)
I guess this explains why my hips hurt like hell and why they feel like they are turning into jell-o.
On the plus side, I have learned that one of my co-workers was a former midwife. Looks like I know who I will be calling to my side if I go into labor at work!

Most recent appointment
My appointments are now every other week. This week the little one's heart beat was in the upper 140s. My tummy measured 32 cm. And my doctor felt his position. "Hmm," she said as she felt for his head, "He is way down there!" I responded, "Oh, I know."
Last week his head decided to go very very low. As in, his skull was rubbing against my pelvis. I was at work at the time. I had to try to wake him up and pull him up as much as possible. The next day two separate co-workers told me that I was walking much better and did not look like I was in as much pain.
While checking out of the doctor's office I was asked if I cared which doctor I saw when I came back in. I said that I didn't care, but that when I went into labor Dr Carmichael needs to be the one on call. Dr C was in the process of putting notes in my file regarding the appointment, looked up, and said, "Yes Ma'am!"

Quickie Update
Braxton Hicks + toddler in the house = dear lord I am losing my mind.
I am putting myself on couch rest while my mom plays with Laine. Al and my dad are painting Laine's new room. Al chose the color purple and I chose the shade from the purple paint samples. I went with the grayest shade we had. It came out lavendar.

A Growing Healthy Baby Boy
I gained 5 pounds over the past month. My frontal height is 30 cm, which is actually 2 cm smaller than we would expect at this point. His heart is strong in the 140 bpm range. He has stopped flipping back and forth it seems and my doctor also thinks he is now presenting head first. He stretches alittle from time to time. But in general he is a giant cuddle bug.
There are now videos posted on the Shutterfly account. See Laine walk with confidence. See Laine wiggle her butt as she dances to music on the tv. See Laine play with her food.

A month in review
Laine is now walking on her own with confidence. This began last week. Last weekend was filled with chasing a walking and screaming baby going, "Ma! Ma! Ma!" or "Da! Da! Da!" or just plain "AAAAAAA!"
Let's see what else. Some random lady with only 5 or so teeth stopped me on the street outside my work 2 weeks ago and offered me a very wrinkled, dirty, and stained maternity shirt. It was actually quite touching. This lady had very little. Her church gave her the shirt even though she certainly is not going to have a baby (she was too old to have a child). She didn't even ask for money for the shirt. It was just a shirt she knew that she couldn't use and that I might need. I let her know that I was all set despite her touching gesture.
Last week I paid her nice gesture forward. On my way into the train station from work I found a $20 bill on the ground. (There are so many people around that station that it was obvious that it had only been on the ground for less than 60 seconds.) Once in the station there was a woman my age digging through her pocket with a look of concern. I asked her if she lost some money. She said yes. I held out the 20 and asked, "Was it a 20?" After I said that I came in the station behind her and found it on the ground, she took it. I didn't get a thank you out of her, but I did get several shocked looks from people around us. On the way through the gates a guy looked at me and said that the woman was extremely lucky that it was a person like me who found it.
Oh wait... this is a blog about the kids, not me... sorry about that aside there.
Mr. Unborn Baby now knows that he can go upside down. Then back to right side up. Then back. And forth. Etc. Lucky me! He isn't exactly small anymore and the feeling of a baby flipping inside you is NOT comfortable.
I am getting up 2-3 times in the middle of the night to pee. Thank you little one for putting all that pressure on my bladder even when I am laying down.
When he is awake and active, it looks like I have bombs going off in my abdomen. It is rather funny to see my tummy dance around. In general he is a pretty good baby (when he is not stretching and stabbing me with his feet and toes) and we have begun to play the "chase the knee/foot around game." He sticks his knee or foot out and I draw circles around it with my fingers. He moves it and I move along with him. We continue this game until he gets frustrated and retracts his knee or foot.
When Laine sees my naked belly she is compelled to put her index finger in my belly button. I hope to get a picture of this later since it is rather funny.
We are down to two names for Mr. Unborn Baby. Actually we have been down to two for awhile now. We are just keeping our baby's name hush-hush this time around. You'll find out when he is born. It'll be a surprise! So if you do know, don't go blasting it around. Here is a hint though: his first or middle name will be after a very special relative of mine that had a very positive impact on me and my life.
I am sure there is more to say but I am tired and not thinking straight.

Update
Okay, I am horrible person. I can't seem to find the time to update this thing. Here is what I have been up to instead:
1- Randomly falling asleep in the middle of the day
2- Working (furloughs have ended... for a month or so)
3- Getting beat up by my son
4- Laying in bed with insomnia at 2 AM
5- Sweating (it has been in the mid to high 90s for weeks now)
6- Getting fat
7- Trying to stay as social as possible
8- Walking Laine around the house (she insists on holding one of our hands as she strolls around the house)
9- Picking up Laine's toys
10- Going to the doctor's office
What I have NOT been up to:
1- Doing a good job of taking care of these varicous veins
2- Getting Laine's new room up to snuff (Al got mad at me the other week... I kinda decided that I should move my treddle, a couch, a chair, a desk, etc. into the office in attempts at getting the room somewhat ready. Yeah, that was a bad idea.)
3- Getting ready for the little one's arrival
4- Re-reading the natural childbirth book I have (my plan is to scream through the experience like I did before)
5- Finishing my co-worker's baby quilt. Note: The baby was born two months ago. Whoops!
6- Climbing stairs.
Our little boy is doing well. His heart was beating in the 140s during the visit last week. He heard me tell my doc that he doesn't move that much. My doc said that if he goes awhile without moving to give them a call so that they can hook him up to some monitors. He apparently did not like idea because the very next day he was active as hell. He has continued on that trend since then as well.
He is still right-side-up and having lots of fun kicking my bladder and kidneys. He has until late August to turn on his own, or else we will be doing some manual turning of him in the doc's office. I'm not worried yet but I must admit that he does not go upside down at all. Meanwhile, Laine was upside down for the entire pregnancy with the exception of when she turned right side up to kick at the band on my pants. Two very different children!
On that note, the other differences I have noted:
1- He hasn't had the hiccups yet. Laine had them all the time.
2- Laine always woke up on the train. He easily sleeps through it.
3- Laine never gave me back or butt pain. Him? Yeah, I think I already spent an entire post complaining about it. The pain continues!
4- Laine hated stuff in "her space" (she is still like that). He could care less.
5- His kicks and punches can be rythmic in nature. Laine just wiggled around.
6- He does marathon wake and sleep cycles AND he is a night owl. I do not recollect any of that about Laine.

Houston, we have lift off...
... kinda. Laine is getting braver (depending on her mood) when it comes to walking.
Here she was last weekend with Cousin Drea and Daddy (Cousin Chris in background).

I got a picture right as she let go. She did very little stepping and alot of falling into people.
Yesterday though, she got acouple steps in between Daddy and me before falling. She was very excited. Too excited in fact. She did it acouple of times then she started laughing so hard that she couldn't keep her balance at all.
The next several weeks should be exciting!
Also in developmental milestone news: Laine learned how to climb up all of the stairs yesterday! YAY! (Previously, she could only get up one step.)

Colorful Leg
Have you ever experienced varicose veins? How about bursting blood vessels? No? Hmm. Lucky me, those are my newest side effect of pregnancy. My left leg is rather gross looking; all bumpy and multi-colored. My leg is also painful when I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. My mom has given me strict instructions to keep my leg elevated at all times.
Have you ever experienced back pain? How about pain around your tail bone? I swear I feel like I have a bruise all around my tail bone after sitting in my work chair for an hour. I am trying to get a new one but my doctor is slow to get me the appropriate paperwork to give to my employer.
I forgot about how exhausted I get being pregnant. At the end of the day, all I want is to lay down on the couch.
Have I mentioned I am getting fat? I have been told that I am carrying my weight differently. I am not gaining weight in my face... yet.
Acne. At one point in my life I would like to have none. Pregnancy just seems to bring out the blemishes.
Let's see... what else can I complain about? I have to pull myself up the stairs when I carry Laine up the steps. (Carrying two kids at once isn't easy.) My foot just went numb. (The foot attached to the leg that is elevated.) I think I am done griping for the moment.
On the positive side, our son is doing well. He is currently in the process of tenderizing my back. (He likes to kick inward, not outward.) At our appointment last week his heart was beating at 120-130 bpm.

Laine's First Birthday & Baby Boy Kicking
Lots of visitors = no post in awhile. (My parents and Al’s parents were all here for Laine’s first birthday party.)
Our son so far is a little cuddle bug. He moves and kicks but settles quickly. This is a good thing because this pregnancy is going to kill me. I can’t stop eating! Actually, that part is not so bad. The time when I was unable to stop puking was not so great. I am glad that part is over with. His heartbeat during our last appointment was in the 140s. I don’t have a tummy measurement to share (my doc forgot the measuring tape), but my uterus came up to my belly button.
I fear that Laine will have a drinking problem when she gets older. Here she is kissing the kegerator.

She also apparently likes chocolate ice cream.

Laine’s first birthday party went very well. And she had a very good turn out. We went all out. Al smoked some ribs and pork. He then made 5 different BBQ sauces for people to sample. I made pudding cups. (I melted chocolate and made the cups and filled them with banana cream pudding and chocolate fudge pudding. They were topped with cool whip and sprinkles.) I also made petit-four brownies, dipped them in melted chocolate, and then piped some rose buds on them. Then there were the cupcakes I made...

(Big grin.) The sunflowers are Oreo cookies with hand piped petals made of royal icing. The butterflies are made of white chocolate. I melted the chocolate and piped the outline of the wings onto waxed paper. I then dyed some of the chocolate blue and filled in the outline. The daisies are made of a combination of fondant and gum paste. I used a daisy cutter to make them. The centers are halved mini-marshmallows dipped in yellow colored sugar. The monkey candle was from Laine's baby shower cake. All of the cupcakes were covered in green fondant.

Swiffer Service & Other Stuff
Is your Swiffer not up to par? Hate how you have to take time out of your day to move it around on the floor? Well, I have a new service for you! It is called Swiffy Nifty Laine. Yes, that is right ladies and gentleman. She pushes the swiffer rag around for you. She smiles and laughs while doing so. And the best part, you don’t have to do a thing!

Yesterday Laine and I went four-leaf clover hunting in the front yard. Our patch has the genetic mutation that actually makes finding four-leaf clovers easy. We found eight four-leaf clovers and two-five leaf clovers. Here is one of the four-leaf ones before I picked it. (Man, this camera kicks butt.)

Development Updates:
We have been working with Laine to stand up using something as support. Up until this afternoon she has only stood up with our assistance. But here is a picture of her standing and we did not assist her at all! She was motivated by the ice cream cone that I was eating and that she wanted.

Laine knows that the shaped blocks she has go into the holes in the cover. She knows this because I show her often. Now she just has to learn to match the shapes and put them in vertically.

Big Update
We had our super-duper ultrasound yesterday at the hospital. The great news is that there was nothing that came up as out of the normal. Bone structure is proportional, heart has been properly formed, looks like he isn’t polydactal like Laine and Daddy, etc.
He is 6 ounces, which is small for being 18 weeks. However, during the first ultrasound when we were 8 weeks my doc said he was measuring 5 days smaller. The lady doing the ultrasound said the same thing yesterday. So, if he comes into the world late, no big whoop.
He was asleep at the beginning, so the lady had no issues getting pictures of him. Then he started tapping his left foot and woke up. He got very active and decided to roll over. By the time the doctor came in the little one decided to give him a run for his money.
Oh and if you couldn’t tell already… he is a boy! Yay! In all my dreams of him he has been a boy. Except for one dream where he was a girl; I looked at her and said, “Sweetheart, you were supposed to be a boy.” So, it looks like I was right after all. (An aside: Have you noticed how many times I have typed s in this post? I have. Mostly because my keyboard has not recognized half of the ones I have typed.)
He received his first gift last week from Lindsay and Ack. It is an adorable little onesie with a little frog on it.
Yes, I have started feeling him. Mostly when I am laying down on my side. I try to go to sleep while he is tickling me.
Laine has been a little spitfire as well. She blabbles and every once in awhile will appear to throw a real word in there. She is certainly picking up words even if she doesn’t always use them. “Kitty” is no longer “key-key,” it is hard k sound, almost Yiddish sounding. Laine handed Daddy a toy last weekend and he said, “Thank you” and swears Laine then said, “You’re welcome.” This morning Laine sneezed and said something with two syllables that sounded a lot like “bless you.”
Laine’s newest trick? I taught her how to go “Aaaa” then tap her mouth with her hand. By taught her, I mean that I did it once and she copied me. She won’t do it on her own but when she sees someone do it, she will do it too.
Laine is a certainly a free spirit. I can’t count the number of times I have gone to pick her up from daycare and have had to take time to scan all the babies playing in the center of the room and think to myself, “Where is she?” Once I found her against the back wall making out with herself in the mirror. I usually find her investigating the high chairs, which are in the front corner of the room.
For those who were wondering, I took my three-day Introduction to Fondant cake decorating class last week. Pictures can be found here. Use the same password as if you were going to go look at pictures Laine.

Bad Baby
So my daughter likes to get into mischief. Who woulda thunk it? Oh wait, I did! (Rolling eyes.)
Electrical outlets? We have them all covered, but the fact that they look different from the rest of the wall surface just makes Laine gravitate towards them. She can't keep her hands to herself. If you say, "No!" there is no reaction. If you sternly shout, "Laine Marie!" she will suddenly turn, put her hands on her lap and give you the "I wasn't doin' nuffing" look.
The cats' water dish? Laine gets up on her knees so that she to reach in and put her hand in the water to splash around. (We have the water dish in a bucket because the cats also like to splash their water around.) Yesterday, I told her that she was not to do that and I wiped off her hand with a paper towel. I moved her away from the dish and gave her a toy to play with. She dropped the toy, crawled as fast as her little arms and legs could carry her back to the water dish, dipped her hand in, then sat down and held her hand out so that I would dry it off again. *Sigh* Oh, she also had a smile on her face once she held her hand up to me. *Double sigh*
The cats' food dish? Laine only tried to eat the food once. However, she knows she is not supposed to be around it. So... it is now a game. She goes for the food dish, stops, sits up to see if anyone is watching. If someone is watching, she smiles and continues to crawl to it, but stops short of the dish waiting to be scooped up or to have her feet grabbed. Both cause her to laugh hysterical. If you grab her feet she will instantly drop to her tummy and wait to be pulled back. If you are slow to pull her back, she will start to push herself backwards. Now, you may read this and say, “Oh, just ignore her if she goes for the food dish.” Yeah, well I tried that. To get your attention she will put her hand in the food, knock it around, and pull it out.
Trash cans? Laine loves to go into boxes, buckets, and trash cans to take out whatever she can reach. She pulls out her dirty clothes in her hamper (hamper = a storage tote we keep on the floor in her room) and makes a giant pile on the floor. We have a box upstairs that has all the cats’ toys in it. Laine also loves to pull these out and play with them. She has now discovered that the tall garbage cans can be knocked over so that she can more easily get at the paper and receipts in it. (The kitchen garbage is in a cabinet behind childproof locks and it is the only garbage we put stuff that might be harmful for her in.)
Diaper changes? She cries, flips over, and tries to crawl away… even when she is on the changing table. You try catching a half naked baby that is in the process of sticking her foot in a dirty diaper!

Waving
Laine is doing a great job of mimicking our movements. Waving is her newest trick.
If you wave to Laine, she will study your hand and pick up her hand to make the same movements. She will glance back and forth from her hand to your hand to ensure she is doing it right. Then she smiles a great big smile when she knows she has it right.
So there you'll be, waving at Laine... and she will be waving at herself too.

Oh my, it is hot
Today is the second day that has reached 90 degrees. That isn't my excuse for not posting for awhile but regardless it is too hot down here. An update from our world:
1- I have puked many times since that last post.
2- The youngest one had a heat beat rate of 160 during our last appointment. We should hopefully find out if he/she is a he or a she on the 23rd.
3- Laine can kinda sorta link sounds with items. Basically she has been ability to say "key-key" when you point to a kitty and say "kitty."
4- We taught Laine to cluck with her tounge the other day. Now she crawls around while clucking. Really, it is quite funny.
5- Laine has become a fast little crawler when she wants to be.
6- Laine can turn lights on and off... provided that you hold her up to the light switch and ask her to turn it on or off.
7- Umm... I am sure there is more but I can't think of anything else off the top of my head.

Seconds anyone?
So, as promised, I was going to do a post today that would dazzle you, surprise you, wow you, and otherwise shock you. I hope I will live up to the hype for you loyal (few) readers. But first, I must tease you a bit and make you think. The title of this post is Hint #1.
Think about it for a moment.
Hint #2 is the below image:

Think about it for a moment again. Got it yet? Need something else?
Hint #3 is the below picture taken within the hour:

You shouldn’t have to think very long this time. I know you have it. You have to have it now. If you don't have it, I worry about you. However, I will give you one more hint.
Here it is, the nail in the coffin, the below picture is “Hint” #4 which was taken two months ago:

Baby Braga #2’s due date is September 24th.
Dazzled? Surprised? Wowed? Shocked? Did I live up to the hype?

Sick Family
Why no post recently? Because I have been sick! Two weeks with this damn cold and now (only now) I am starting to feel better. Laine is feeling better from it as well. I think Daddy may be pulling out of it soon too.
Laine is doing exceptionally well. She is still a very good baby with a very pleasant disposition.
We apparently need to invest in a swing. Daycare put her in a swing this week and she apparently laughed so hard that she lost her voice.

Slap, Clap, & Escape
Laine was playing with a tupperware dish last week and I showed her how it could be made into a drum. I showed her how to hit it so that it would make noise. She mimicked my actions and got the noise too. The problem? That behavior has generalized. Now, everything is a drum. Her toys, her blocks, Daddy’s head... yes, Daddy’s head! Daddy gives Laine shoulder rides around the house. This last time she wiggled her legs like she was saying, “Giddy up!” and then took her right hand and whapped Daddy on top of the head three times.
I have been working with Laine to show her that she can clap and make noise. She always watched my hands in amazement when I clapped. Tuesday I got her to keep her fingers out of the way so that I could clap her hands for her. Then today when I picked her up from daycare she showed me how she could clap on her own.
Laine decided that she was going to escape the living room while I was pumping yesterday. Too bad for her that she crawls very slowly and she giggled the entire time she tried to make a break for it. She kinda made it easy for me to determine what she was up to.

Tummy Bug
Thanks to a classmate of Laine's, she acquired a tummy bug. I had to pick her up early from daycare on Friday because she wasn't keeping anything down. Saturday was the same. Sunday was much better.
Unfortunately, Daddy and I both have gotten said tummy bug. (I guess that is what we get for taking care of a sick puking baby on Friday and Saturday.) Mommy got the bug much worse than Daddy. Daddy came home from work on Tuesday to find Laine laying down in her crib and Mommy hugging the toilet. I won't give details about the rest of Mommy's evening... just know that it was not pleasant.
Today Mommy and Daddy needed to take a sick day. Daddy was feeling much better by morning but it took until 5 or 6 PM before Mommy started feeling better.
Note- I finally updated the Shutterfly. I have XMas pics up along with the rest of December and January. January was taken with my new camera!

Have I mentioned...?
Laine is able to go from a laying down position to a sitting position. It is very odd to hear her talking in the baby monitor, then turn on the camera to see her sitting up in her crib staring at the monitor with a, "Well, I'm waaaaaiiting!" look on her face.
Laine can crawl 4 inches before flopping on her tummy and out-stretching her arms. She kicks her feet and does a side-to-side rocking motion to move herself the last several inches/feet to her destination. Hey, at least she is trying.
Laine loves paper. She loves to hear it crinkle and she likes to rip it too. (I hope Daddy didn't need those paper on the floor by his desk that said H&R Block on them.) Give her a phone book and she will glady rip the pages out for you.
I've decided to cut out my 2 AM pumping session. This means I can go to bed at 10-10:30 after my last pump of the day, then get out of bed at 5:45 (in pain) to start my first pump of the day. I have done this for the past two nights and I honestly think my body does not know what to do with all this time to sleep. Both mornings I woke up at 3:30 AM thinking, "Yup, I am awake. Wide awake. This sucks." I then manage to get a 45 minute nap at some point between 4 and 5:30. But seriously, this the most sleep I've gotten in months! It feels amazing!

Hats
Laine screams and pulls off hats when you put them on her. Sometimes she will be okay with it, but most times she is not okay with it. I just thought that she did not like stuff on her head. However, Daddy found out that she just doesn't like stuff over her ears. If you put on a hat, and tuck it behind her ears, that is apparently okay.

3 Square Meals
We now eat 3 meals a day. And by "we," I mean "Laine." (Mommy is still working on it.)

Weekend’s developmental milestones & tickles
Laine knows that the reflection in the mirror is her and not another baby. Her reflection makes her smile and laugh. When she sees one of our reflections in the mirror, she will turn around to look at us directly.
Laine knows how to initiate peek-a-boo on her own. Twice now she has picked up her burp rag with two hands and lifted it so that it blocked everything in her line-of-sight, then quickly threw her hands down and gave us a happy surprised look. She of course repeated this after we said, “Peek-a-boo!”
Laine is ticklish in her armpits. Being tickled there results in hysterical laughs. Or, “Would you quit it, already,” looks when she is otherwise occupied with her toys.

Da!
So on the home from daycare today, Laine was in a good mood. She tried to sing along with the song on the radio. Yup... to the Beastie Boy's Intergalatic. When they put an emphasis on a sylable, Laine was right behind them putting emphasis in too.
For example:
BB- "I like my sugar with coffee and cream"
Laine- "Da!"
BB- "Well I got to keep it going keep it going full steam"
Laine- "Da!"
BB- "Too sweet to be sour too nice to be mean"
Laine- "Da!"

The Holidays
The Holidays have come
-- Thank god it is all done
The Holidays have gone
-- With snow upon the lawn
I could post of those Laine met
Although I will wager a bet
That I will leave someone out
Which will make them pout
There are pictures on Shutterfly
-- Where there are Laine pictures you can buy
Or you can come down here
-- Where Al will serve you a beer
Writing in rhyme isn’t easy
Although it is keeping me busy
I should go now
Bow-wow.
PS- HAPPY BIRTHDAY LAINE'S GRAMMIE!!
